USE THE NEWSPAPER
T. PIERCE BROWN
In the past few months I have had dozens of letters to the editor published in many newspapers. We are failing to use a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on the public by not trying to use the means available. There will be 100 times as many persons who are not Christians who will read those letters as there are who read what I write in all the gospel papers combined. Can you imagine the impact for good if every Christian who cares enough about an issue to write about it to your local newspaper would do so in a courteous, thoughtful manner, showing how Christ has the answer for our problems?
There are thousands of letters printed that do not get a three star silver pen award, but they are read. Each may do very little good, relatively speaking, but we could say the same thing for sermons and articles to gospel papers. That does not mean they are worthless, for if many Christians wrote with an emphasis on Christian principles, there is little doubt that it would have an impact.
It is generally better to try to write a shorter letter, but it is possible to get ones longer published if you have something significant to say. Do not try to be “preacherish” but suggest basic and important truths that we need to emphasize, that will be read by thousands.
