SHOULD I GO?
T. Pierce Brown
At the beginning of the planning for the ONE NATION UNDER GOD campaign, before we even named the program, I sent letters to every publication in the brotherhood announcing that we would be starting a program of getting the gospel message into every home in the nation in 1991. I also sent a letter to Mr. Gorbachev telling him of our plans, and suggesting that when we finished the planning here, we would be glad to come toRussiaand do the same kind of thing there. I told him of Christ and his love and suggested that he look at Christ according to the Bible and historical facts rather than through the eyes of established religions, for he had just had a visit with the Pope.
Suppose he answers my letter and sends $5000, saying, “We want you to speak to the Council about the program as quickly as you can.” Should I go? I am looking at the advice of brethren who say, “You should limit yourself to participation with faithful churches of Christ. If you go, and especially if you take the money he sent you to go, you are having fellowship with the evil empire, violating the scriptures and failing to walk in the light.”
Should I listen to the criticism of brethren who would accuse me of soliciting contributions from the Communists? Or should I try to accept opportunities to obey my Lord as I try to preach the gospel to every creature under heaven? Should I stop and engage in debates with brethren who insist that putting up a display of the ONE NATION UNDER GOD campaign inRed Squareis the same as having fellowship with the denominations or Communistic doctrine?
When slanderous reports come, should I take the time to respond as Paul did in Romans 3:8 and let them know that their “damnation is just?” Should I do as Jesus did in Luke 2:49 when his mother rebuked him, and just continue to be about my Father’s business? Should I return the $5000, in case he sends it, in deference to the advice of brethren who sound “sound,” or should I follow their example instead of their advice and use it for the glory of God? Should I go, as Jesus did in the face of criticism of having fellowship with publicans and sinners (Matthew9:11)?
If you think I should follow the example and teaching of Jesus, why not send your contribution for the ONE NATION UNDER GOD campaign, for I am not waiting to get one fromRussia. If you do not think I should go, and should return the $5000 if he should send it, let me know at once why you think so.
